Kittie Jones

Biography
"My work is concerned with the experience of time spent within the natural world. I am drawn to places which have an abundance of nature - sea bird colonies, fertile coastlines, and remote islands. The energy in the work comes from the constantly changing elements of the natural world - birds moving in and out of vision and the shifting quality of weather and light. My attempts to capture the change are what interests me, as well as my enchantment with a world which, as a human, I will only ever occupy the edge of."

BIOGRAPHY

Kittie Jones is an artist and educator based in Edinburgh. She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh University in 2008 and now works from her studio in Leith, regularly exhibiting around the UK.

Kittie has won a number of awards for her work. She was awarded the William J Macaulay/Scottish Gallery Award for her piece Gannets Over the Atlanticat the Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition in 2021; in 2018 her monotype Feeding Curlew was awarded the RSPB Award at the Natural Eye exhibition in London. Kittie was elected a professional member of the Society of Wildlife Artists in 2016, and has been a professional member of Visual Arts Scotland since 2013.

Kittie's practice focuses on drawing and printmaking - she produces mixed media drawings on paper, multi-layered monotypes and small edition screenprints. Kittie is inspired by the full sensory experience of time spent outdoors, most often along the east coast of Scotland. Much of her work is completed outside, and other sketches provide a starting point for prints and studio drawings.

Her interest in print stems from a love of drawing. Through her print practice, Kittie is fascinated by what happens when the drawn mark is translated to the printed mark, allowing for an opening up of ideas and an interpretative response to any original observed drawings. A love of colour also provides a strong starting point for much of the work - the layering of colour in print allowing for a distinct, coherent image whilst also providing unexpected harmonies and relationships.
