The Translating Travels screenprint was commissioned by Edinburgh Printmakers as part of Imi Maufe’s solo exhibition of the same name in 2017. The work was created during Maufe’s three-week residency at Edinburgh Printmakers where she spent her time investigating new journeys through the medium of screenprint.
Translating Travels offers a reflective take on what it means to travel and what we take with us after finishing a journey, looking at how multi-disciplinary printmaking can visually represent journeys and experiences of place.
Imi Maufe (b.1974) is an artist and curator who works from her studio in Bergen, Norway. She trained as a landscape architect before returning to art school to complete an MA in Multi-disciplinary Printmaking at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Her practice is multi-disciplinary with particular focuses in printmaking, book arts, and jewellery.
“My work is about: capturing INCIDENTS; riding BICYCLES; studying MAPS; exploring GENIUS LOCI; interacting with LANDSCAPE; finding HIDDEN NUANCES; jogging MEMORIES; collating COLLECTIONS; playing with TEXT; challenging POST OFFICES; manipulating WAYS OF SEEING; discovering the UNEXPECTED; digging up HISTORY; documenting EXPERIENCE; collaborating with PEOPLE; making ARTISTS BOOKS; remembering JOURNEYS; responding to PLACE; dismantling TYPEWRITERS; extracting CONVERSATIONS; in no logical order!” (1)
In 2017 Maufe undertook a three-week residency here at Edinburgh Printmakers.
